Nutrafol Review: Does It Work, and Is It Worth the Cost?
Nutrafol asks you to commit to several months of daily capsules and a meaningful recurring bill. The decision gets easier when you know which formula you are buying, what its studies actually found and what you will pay before you can judge the difference.

The quick answer
Does it work?
Nutrafol may improve hair growth or fullness for some adults with thinning hair. The evidence is encouraging, but its strength varies by formula. It does not establish that every cause of hair loss will respond.
What does it cost?
The Women subscriptions compared here start at $79 per monthly delivery. The storefront’s six-month option is $389 upfront, equivalent to $64.83 a month. Compare buying options.
How long is the commitment?
Many studies assessed changes at three and six months. One bottle is a short test of the daily routine, not a reliable verdict on regrowth.
What changed in 2026?
Today’s Women formula is the former Women’s Vegan formula. The original Women trial tested a different product. See the formula change.

Is Nutrafol worth trying?
Nutrafol is worth considering if you understand the likely cause of your thinning, are comfortable with uncertain improvement and can afford several months without displacing more appropriate care. It is a less convincing purchase if you expect a quick fix, assume all hair loss is nutritional or need the lowest possible ongoing expense.
The brand sells multi-ingredient supplements with vitamins, minerals and botanical extracts. That is different from identifying a deficiency and replacing the nutrient you need. A dermatologist can assess the pattern of loss and decide whether examination alone, blood tests or other investigation would be useful. You do not need to order a universal “hair-loss panel” before every purchase. AAD diagnosis guidance.
Consider the supplement conversation
You have gradual thinning that has been assessed, want to discuss an oral supplement alongside your options and can maintain the capsule routine. Bring the exact label, a medication list and your other supplements to that conversation.
Make the cause the first priority
Hair loss is sudden, patchy, painful or accompanied by an irritated scalp, or is progressing despite what you are already doing. Buying a larger supply does not answer why it is happening. How hair loss is assessed.
Our conclusion is deliberately product-specific: there is more evidence here than a collection of customer reviews, but less certainty than the phrase “clinically proven” can suggest. Read the study comparison for the formula you are considering, then compare its full cost with your other options.
Which Nutrafol formula are you looking at?
Women vs. Women’s Vegan: the 2026 change
Current Nutrafol Women is the former Women’s Vegan formula under a new name. Nutrafol’s August 25, 2026 announcement says the contents did not change with the rename. It is vegan and biotin-free; the original Women formulation was different. An older review discussing two separate Women and Women’s Vegan choices may therefore describe yesterday’s lineup. Nutrafol’s formula announcement.
The formulation now sold as Women appears in three published studies reviewed here: the 2024 Vegan study, the 2025 hair-fiber study’s Vegan group and the 2026 study’s Advanced Formula group. None had a placebo group. The placebo-controlled women’s trials below tested original Women or Women’s Balance. Check the Supplement Facts when comparing older reviews or remaining stock.
| Product name | How Nutrafol positions it | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Women | Its current women’s formula, formerly Women’s Vegan | Match the current label to the evidence. “Women” in a 2018 paper refers to the original product. |
| Women’s Balance | A formula for women around and after the menopause transition | The Balance study is separate from the original Women study. A birthday alone does not explain new thinning. |
| Men | The brand’s core men’s formula | Its randomized trial reported encouraging secondary findings, with an important hair-count measurement problem. |
| Men 50+ | A separate formula marketed for men 50 and older | Do not assume that the Men trial tested Men 50+. The manufacturer describes a smaller study for this product. |
| Postpartum | A formula marketed for the period after childbirth | Discuss the actual ingredients with your maternity clinician, including breastfeeding and other supplements. Natural postpartum recovery complicates result claims. |
These are manufacturer product categories, not a personalized recommendation. Sources: current Women, Balance trial, Men trial, Men 50+ product information, postpartum hair-loss guidance.
Ingredients: read the bottle, not just the brand name
The current Women label lists four capsules per daily serving and 30 servings per bottle. It includes nutrients such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, zinc and selenium, plus a blend containing ashwagandha, saw palmetto and other ingredients. Individual amounts within a proprietary blend are not all itemized. More ingredients do not tell you whether your particular cause of thinning will respond. Current product and label.
Check for overlap with a multivitamin or another hair supplement. If a clinician has identified a deficiency, use their replacement plan rather than assuming a broad supplement contains the right amount of the needed nutrient.
Does Nutrafol work? What the studies actually show
Some Nutrafol studies found improved hair counts compared with placebo. Others found changes over time without a placebo group. Both are useful to know about, but the second design cannot separate a product effect from natural changes and other influences as confidently.
The key studies below involved manufacturer funding and/or manufacturer-affiliated authors. That does not erase the findings. It does make study design, missing measurements and independent replication important parts of the decision.
| Formula and study | What researchers found | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Original Women, 2018 | A six-month trial of 40 women found improved hair counts versus placebo. | A small randomized, double-blind study, but of the original formula. It is not a direct trial of today’s Women. Study. |
| Women’s Balance, 2021 | In a six-month randomized trial of 70 women, terminal and total hair counts improved versus placebo. | Relevant controlled evidence for the studied menopause-transition group. “Terminal” means the thicker, visible hairs. Study. |
| Women’s Vegan, now Women, 2024 | Hair counts and shedding measurements improved from baseline; 110 women enrolled and 95 completed six months. | There was no placebo group, and participants followed plant-based diets. The findings support further study rather than a guaranteed result for everyone. Study. |
| Men, 2025 | At six months, investigators rated growth as improved in 79% of the supplement group versus 51% of placebo. | Those are assessment ratings, not 79% more hair. The planned hair-count endpoint could not be analyzed because protocol deviations at one site made many scalp images unusable. Study. |
| Five formula groups, published online 2025 | Hair-fiber diameter increased during six months of use in an open-label study. | Thicker strands and more hairs are different outcomes. Without placebo, this cannot show how much improvement the supplements caused. Study. |
| Four women’s formula groups, 2026 | Growth rate and total hair counts improved; count increases ranged from about 4% to 8% across the four groups. One group took today’s Women, called Advanced Formula. | No placebo group. The title says randomized, but the limitations describe a nonrandomized design. Study. |
How to read the study numbers without being misled
A hair count measures hairs in the area being assessed. Fiber diameter measures strand thickness. Growth rate measures how quickly hair gains length. A questionnaire records someone’s perception. A change in one does not establish the same change in the others.
The 2025 Men trial enrolled 112 participants; 85 were in its per-protocol analysis, including 52 taking the supplement and 33 taking placebo. The missing primary hair-count result matters even though several secondary measures favored the supplement. Full Men paper.
The 2026 study analyzed all 180 enrollees, estimating missing follow-up values; 150 completed per protocol. Its Postpartum group was not postpartum, limiting what it establishes about postpartum shedding. Full 2026 paper.
What we would take from this evidence
The research supports discussing Nutrafol as an option, with expectations tied to the actual formula. It does not establish that the brand works for every type of hair loss, that one formula is best for everybody or that a supplement is equivalent to an approved hair-loss medication.
For current Women, the formula change is particularly important: the older placebo-controlled trial and the newer plant-based formulation should not be described as interchangeable evidence. We would also avoid judging your likely outcome from a dramatic customer photograph without knowing the diagnosis, other treatments, lighting and time elapsed.
Ways to buy Nutrafol and what each costs
Monthly delivery has the smaller first bill. Multi-month delivery has the lower cost per bottle in the Women options we checked. Your best choice depends on both the cash commitment and the purchase terms.

What six bottles really cost
To compare like with like, the table below totals six bottles of Women using each delivery schedule. It assumes unchanged listed subscription prices, with no extra promotion, tax or checkout adjustment. A bottle contains 30 daily servings; six bottles provide 180 daily servings at the labeled amount.
| Delivery choice | NuWays MD storefront | Nutrafol.com | Amount charged at the first delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Six monthly deliveries | $474 | $474 | $79 through either route |
| Two three-month deliveries | $418 | $448 | $209 storefront / $224 direct |
| One six-month delivery | $389 | $422 | $389 storefront / $422 direct |

The storefront’s six-month delivery is $85 less than six of its monthly deliveries. Comparing the same six-month delivery between the two routes, the difference is $33. Those are different comparisons, and neither makes the larger upfront order right for every reader.
Is Nutrafol from a provider the same product?
The link here opens a Nutrafol-hosted Growth Partner storefront, where Nutrafol presents and sells its branded products. NuWays MD is an educational publication, not the treating practice for this purchase. Compare the exact formula and label with the main site, particularly during the Women naming transition. The channel does not make the product stronger or create a personal treatment recommendation.
Ordering through a different channel can change price, subscription management and return or guarantee terms. Keep your order email and use the support and account instructions attached to that order.
What does the Real Growth Guarantee require?
It is a conditional program for eligible first-time subscribers buying on Nutrafol.com, not an automatic refund after trying one bottle. The terms require six bottles over 180 days, an active subscription, app participation and progress-photo submissions. The stated claim window is days 180–210; onboarding and photo deadlines also apply. Read the full guarantee terms before relying on it.
The terms exclude purchases through other sales channels, including the Growth Partner storefront. A storefront order does not qualify for this guarantee. Ordinary returns are a separate policy. Review them at your chosen checkout rather than assuming cancellation refunds an order already processed.
How long should you give it, and what should you track?
Think in months, while keeping a defined point for reassessment. Three- and six-month assessments are common in the studies reviewed here. That is a research timetable, not a promise that you will see a particular result by day 90.
Before starting, decide what improvement would matter to you and how much you are willing to spend before reviewing the decision. A few consistent observations are more useful than checking the mirror many times a day.
- Take baseline photos of the same part and scalp areas in consistent lighting, distance and styling. Keep them private unless you choose to share them with your clinician or a program.
- Record the product, start date and other changes, such as a new medication or hair treatment. Otherwise, an improvement may be difficult to attribute.
- Note whether the capsule routine and recurring expense are sustainable. The current Women serving is four capsules a day.
- Reassess with your clinician if loss progresses, symptoms appear or the benefit does not justify the cost. You do not need to finish a prepaid supply despite a concerning reaction.
Do not add every serum, shampoo or booster just because it appears beside the capsules at checkout. A study of the supplement does not establish that you need the entire product range.
Side effects and situations worth checking first
“Natural” does not mean a product cannot cause side effects or interact with medication. Read the full label for the exact formula you intend to use, including allergens, and bring it to a pharmacist or clinician if you take medication or other supplements.
In the 2025 Men trial, possibly or probably related gastrointestinal symptoms affected three people taking Nutrafol and three taking placebo. One person in each group withdrew; there were no serious adverse events. Men trial.
In the 2026 women’s study, eight participants stopped treatment for product-related adverse events. One serious event, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, occurred in the Advanced Formula group, which took today’s Women formulation, and was rated possibly related. This autoimmune thyroid condition was not proven to have been caused by the supplement. Small trials cannot rule out uncommon or longer-term harms. 2026 study.
| Situation | A useful next step |
|---|---|
| Thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions or thyroid medication | NCCIH does not recommend ashwagandha for people with thyroid or autoimmune disorders and warns of possible interactions with thyroid medication. Current Women and Men list ashwagandha and iodine. Review the exact formula with the clinician managing your condition. |
| Pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive | Avoid ashwagandha during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as NCCIH advises. Current Women and Men contain it. Review any formula’s exact label, including Postpartum, with your maternity clinician; product names do not replace an ingredient check. |
| Liver disease, planned surgery or regular medication | NCCIH does not recommend ashwagandha before surgery and lists several medication interactions. Ask your clinician or pharmacist about the exact ingredients and your circumstances. |
| A multivitamin plus another hair supplement | Compare overlapping nutrients and total amounts before combining them. Do not assume doubling the ingredients doubles the benefit. |
The ashwagandha precautions come from NCCIH ingredient guidance. It also describes rare reports of liver injury and limited long-term safety information. Those reports are not a measured injury rate for Nutrafol as a brand.
Biotin and blood tests
Current Women is biotin-free, but that does not describe every Nutrafol product. Men, for example, lists 3,000 mcg of biotin per serving on its current label. For any biotin-containing formula, tell the clinician and lab before testing. Biotin can interfere with certain laboratory results, including some heart-related tests. Ask for instructions appropriate to the test instead of using a blanket stop-time found online. Current formula announcement, FDA biotin guidance.
Nutrafol, minoxidil or a different next step?
Nutrafol and topical minoxidil are different kinds of products. Minoxidil has an established role in pattern hair loss; a supplement’s ingredient story does not make it an equivalent replacement. The right comparison starts with the cause of the thinning and the routine you can maintain. AAD guidance for women and men.
| Option | What you are choosing | The tradeoff to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Nutrafol | A daily, multi-ingredient oral supplement with formula-specific studies | Recurring cost, capsule burden, ingredient precautions and uncertainty about your response |
| Topical minoxidil | Medication used for pattern hair loss | Regular scalp application, potential irritation or unwanted hair, and continued use to maintain benefits |
| Cause-directed care | Treatment or nutritional replacement based on an identified issue | It may address something a broad supplement does not; the first step is an appropriate assessment |
The AAD describes six to 12 months as a possible assessment period for minoxidil in female pattern loss and advises avoiding it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Its schedule should not be swapped with Nutrafol’s study timetable. AAD female-pattern guide.
Is Nutrafol better than Viviscal or PRP?
We did not identify a direct randomized comparison in this review that establishes Nutrafol as better than Viviscal, or that adding it makes PRP work better. Comparisons built from separate studies can mix different people, formulas and outcomes. Evaluate each treatment’s evidence and cost rather than treating a combined package as proof of an added benefit.
Before you subscribe: a five-minute check
Use these questions to finish the decision before entering payment details. You can print the checklist or keep the page bookmarked; no email address is needed to read it.
- Product: Have I checked the exact formula and label, including the Women naming change?
- Fit: Do I understand the likely cause of my thinning and whether medications, pregnancy, other supplements or a health condition change the choice?
- Routine: Can I maintain the labeled daily capsules, and have I set a sensible reassessment point?
- Budget: What is charged today, what repeats, and what will my chosen schedule cost for six bottles?
- Terms: Where do I manage or cancel this subscription, and what return or guarantee terms actually apply to this order?
Frequently asked questions
Is Nutrafol FDA-approved?
No. FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold. Supplements are still regulated; calling the category unregulated would also be inaccurate. Clinical studies and manufacturing claims do not turn a supplement into an FDA-approved hair-loss drug. FDA explanation.
Is Nutrafol Women biotin-free now?
Yes, the current Women formula is biotin-free and uses the former Women’s Vegan formulation. That does not apply to every other product or every older bottle. Check the Supplement Facts rather than relying on a review of the previous formula. Nutrafol’s 2026 announcement.
Is one bottle enough to know whether it works?
One bottle provides 30 daily servings for current Women, while the principal studies reviewed here generally followed people for six months. A month may tell you whether the routine suits you, but it is too short to reproduce those study assessments. A longer purchase still does not guarantee improvement.
Do I have to take Nutrafol forever?
There is no good basis to promise permanent results after stopping, or to give everyone a precise timetable for losing a benefit. We did not identify a randomized withdrawal study in this review that answers that question. Make continuation a deliberate decision based on benefit, tolerability, cost and the underlying cause of your thinning.
Can I take Nutrafol with minoxidil?
Do not assume a supplement is automatically appropriate alongside your current treatment. Review the exact formula, other medicines and reason for hair loss with your clinician or pharmacist. Being able to use two products together is a different question from whether adding the second will improve your results.
Does Nutrafol help hair shedding while taking a GLP-1 medication?
Evidence is insufficient to establish a GLP-1-specific benefit. A 2026 study included seven people receiving incretin-based therapy, but that small subgroup does not settle the question. Discuss new shedding and nutrition during weight loss with the clinician managing your treatment. 2026 paper.
Is Nutrafol necessary for postpartum shedding?
Not automatically. The AAD explains that postpartum shedding is often temporary and most women regain normal fullness by their child’s first birthday. Improvement after starting a supplement may therefore include natural recovery. Discuss persistent loss and any supplement use with your clinician. AAD postpartum guidance.
Can I cancel or skip a Nutrafol subscription?
Nutrafol.com provides cancellation through your subscription account. The Growth Partner policy directs customers to subscription management through order emails and describes changing or canceling orders. Check your plan’s available skip or delay controls before the next order processes. Canceling future deliveries is different from receiving a refund for an existing order. Direct-site instructions, storefront subscription policy.
Does Nutrafol accept HSA or FSA payments?
Nutrafol’s current help page says it does not accept HSA or FSA payments. That is a statement about payment acceptance, not a determination of your individual plan’s reimbursement rules. Check with your administrator before expecting reimbursement. Nutrafol payment guidance.
