OUR TAKE

Choose HairMax LaserBand 82 if you want the shortest routine here and don’t mind moving it by hand. Start with iRestore Professional if you prefer a hands-free helmet at a similar price. Their checked direct prices are $849 and $799, respectively. For a premium hands-free option, compare HairMax Lumina with iRestore Elite.

Neither brand has established that its current lineup regrows more hair than the other. The useful differences are the routine, fit, upfront cost and what happens if you return it.

A researched comparison of U.S. devices, manuals, clinical papers and purchase terms. We have not worn or tested these products. Prices and policies checked October 26, 2026.

1 · Choose the model, then the brand

HairMax vs. iRestore at a glance

“HairMax or iRestore?” hides two different decisions. A band you move through your hair competes on speed. A helmet competes on how easily treatment fits into the rest of your day. Start with the model you would actually use.

2 · The practical comparison

HairMax LaserBand 82 vs. iRestore Professional

At the checked prices, these two are only $50 apart. The better question is whether you prefer a brief task that needs your attention or a longer session you can combine with reading or watching television.

Our pick for the shortest active routine

HairMax LaserBand 82 ComfortFlex

Specifications reviewed · Not hands-on tested

What makes it different
Teeth part the hair as you reposition the band
Power setup
Rechargeable internal battery

LaserBand’s advantage is simple: it asks for very little time. You move it through three scalp positions rather than wearing a full helmet for an extended session. Its vibration cues guide the sequence.

This is the option we would shortlist for someone who wants treatment over before starting the rest of the evening. Think of it as a short grooming task, rather than something you wear while doing another activity.

Choose it for: a quick routine and a portable format.
Consider another option if: moving the band through every position is likely to become a chore, or you specifically want a leave-in-place helmet.

iRestore Professional

Specifications reviewed · Not hands-on tested

iRestore Professional manufacturer product photograph

What makes it different
Put it on and leave it in place during treatment
Power setup
Corded kit; optional $79 battery upgrade

Professional’s case is convenience at a lower entry price than the premium devices below. It suits someone who can make room for a longer session while sitting at home.

Its 282 emitters include both lasers and LEDs. Treat that as a description of the device, rather than a reason to expect more regrowth than a band. The two-year limited warranty is a practical distinction from HairMax’s one-year coverage.

Choose it for: a hands-free routine without the Elite price.
Consider another option if: 25-minute sessions feel unrealistic, or your priority is an integrated cordless design.

Product details · Compare return terms and fees

iRestore’s 12-month guarantee applies only to eligible U.S. orders on irestorelaser.com. Amazon orders follow the seller’s stated return terms. Prices above are direct-site prices.

Our choice by routine: choose LaserBand if the 90-second sequence sounds easier to maintain. Choose Professional if repositioning is the part you are likely to skip. A longer hands-free session may be easier for you than a shorter active one.

For a lower-cost helmet, also compare the current iRestore Essential, listed at $499 with 120 combined diodes. Professional is not iRestore’s cheapest device. More emitters alone are insufficient reason to spend the extra $300.

3 · When spending more makes sense

HairMax Lumina vs. iRestore Elite

These are convenience upgrades as much as technology upgrades. Lumina puts the battery inside the device and uses a short, three-day weekly routine. Elite uses a shorter daily session than Professional and includes a longer limited warranty.

HairMax Lumina 272

What makes it different
Integrated battery and a leave-in-place design

7 minutes, three times weekly

Lumina is the more relevant HairMax comparison if the reason you like iRestore is hands-free treatment. Unlike LaserBand, it stays in place. Unlike PowerFlex, its battery is integrated into the device.

At the advertised $1,649 code price, it deserves a close look alongside Elite. We would choose it for its ownership routine, while keeping the same questions about fit and realistic results that apply to the less expensive options.

Choose it for: short sessions without an attached battery pack.
Check first: head fit, the current promotional price and the written return deadline. We have not assessed comfort in person.

iRestore Elite

Specifications reviewed · Not hands-on tested

iRestore Elite manufacturer product photograph

What makes it different
12-minute daily sessions
Ownership detail
Three-year limited warranty; battery optional

Elite is the iRestore upgrade for someone who prefers a shorter session every day. Its 500 emitters combine 300 lasers and 200 LEDs, with three advertised wavelengths.

The strongest reasons to consider it are the session format and warranty. We would not turn its additional emitters into a promise of better results than Professional. Its $99 battery upgrade also belongs in the budget if you want to move away from an outlet.

Choose it for: a daily habit and the longer warranty.
Consider another option if: you are paying mainly for the expectation that more diodes will mean more hair.

Product details · Compare return terms and fees

iRestore’s 12-month guarantee applies only to eligible U.S. orders on irestorelaser.com. Amazon orders follow the seller’s stated return terms. Prices above are direct-site prices.

HairMax also sells the PowerFlex 272, a flexible cap using an external battery. It is a separate model from Lumina. Comparisons that simply say “HairMax cap” can blur that distinction.

4 · Compare the whole routine

How much time does each device take?

Compare two weeks, not one session. An every-other-day schedule has seven sessions in 14 days. Three sessions each week gives six. Daily treatment gives fourteen. Setup, cleaning and charging add time beyond the light-on minutes below.

Two weeks of treatment, in minutes

LaserBand 829 min
6 × 1.5 minutes · Repositioned band
Lumina 27242 min
6 × 7 minutes · Hands-free
iRestore Professional175 min
7 × 25 minutes · Hands-free
iRestore Elite168 min
14 × 12 minutes · Hands-free
Calculated from the schedules discussed below. These bars compare treatment time, not treatment effectiveness.

Elite’s 12-minute session is less than half Professional’s 25 minutes. Yet on the schedules above, Elite saves only seven minutes over two weeks. Lumina offers the larger time reduction among these hands-free options. LaserBand is much quicker still, with manual repositioning.

Why our schedule differs from some comparison tables

The HairMax manuals specify three treatments per week and give Monday, Wednesday and Friday as an example. Lumina’s product page also says every other day in another section. That alternate-day schedule would total 49 minutes over two weeks, rather than the manual-based 42 minutes shown above.

iRestore Professional’s how-to section and FDA documentation specify every other day, although its product overview also says three times a week. That three-day weekly schedule would total 150 minutes over two weeks, rather than the alternate-day 175 minutes in our chart.

Follow the instructions supplied with your exact device and ask the manufacturer to resolve a mismatch. The chart compares documented routines; it does not replace your device instructions.

HairMax manuals · Lumina instructions · Professional instructions · FDA schedule comparison

Long hair, fit and cordless use

LaserBand’s teeth help part hair as you move it. With a helmet, check that the device sits as instructed and reaches the areas you want treated. Emitter totals do not tell you how well a particular shape will fit your head.

“Hands-free” also differs from “cordless.” Professional and Elite have optional battery upgrades, listed at $79 and $99. Lumina has an integrated battery. Check the exact kit before comparing prices, especially on a marketplace where accessories may be bundled differently.

5 · Separate evidence from specifications

Does HairMax or iRestore work better?

We found support for light therapy in pattern hair loss, but no published head-to-head trial establishing that these current HairMax models outperform these current iRestore models, or vice versa. That is why our recommendations concern buying fit, rather than a hair-regrowth winner.

Two studies help explain what the evidence can tell a shopper:

StudyWhat it testedWhat it means for this purchase
HairMax trials, 2014Four randomized trials of 7-, 9- and 12-beam lasercombs; 269 people randomized, 225 in the efficacy analysis; 26 weeks.Terminal-hair density improved more than with sham devices. Those combs were not today’s LaserBand or Lumina. Lexington partly funded the research and supplied equipment; some authors disclosed related payments.
Fan and colleagues, 2018100 people enrolled; active light on one side of the scalp and sham treatment on the other; 30 minutes, three times weekly, for 24 weeks. The active side improved more on several measures. The 2021 systematic review identifies the older iRestore ID-520 and lists 74 participants in its study table. This is not a trial of Professional or Elite against HairMax.

Brand-advertised success percentages answer different questions in different studies. A percentage of people whose hair count increased is different from the percentage increase in hair count. Neither should be used as a league table across these brands.

Are HairMax’s lasers better than iRestore’s lasers and LEDs?

Both laser-only and combined systems have supportive research. The 2021 review of seven randomized trials found a larger pooled effect in its laser-only subgroup. That was an indirect comparison across different studies, not a randomized HairMax-versus-iRestore test. It cannot settle which of these devices will work better for you.

Likewise, “500 diodes” on Elite means 300 lasers plus 200 LEDs, not 500 lasers. Professional has 82 lasers and 200 LEDs; LaserBand has 82 lasers and Lumina 272. Count, wavelength, delivered dose and placement describe a design. More of one specification does not establish a bigger visible result.

What does FDA clearance add?

The 510(k) pathway assesses substantial equivalence for a specified intended use. It is not a brand ranking. The records below make the model distinction inspectable.

  • HairMax 82-beam device: K142573, originally named LaserComb 82. A later FDA summary identifies it as sold under the LaserBand name.
  • iRestore Professional 282: K183417.
  • iRestore Elite, ID-510: K222081.
  • Lumina: HairMax markets it as FDA-cleared. We have not independently matched that retail name to a specific clearance record, so we do not assign it another model’s number.

The linked HairMax 82, Professional and Elite records describe specific male and female pattern-loss classifications and Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV. If your situation falls outside the labeling, ask a dermatologist how that affects the evidence for you.

6 · Price the exit, too

What if you buy it and decide to return it?

A longer trial is valuable, but “money-back” does not mean a full refund. At the checked direct prices, the stated percentage fee alone ranges from $169.80 for LaserBand to $449.75 for Elite.

The fee you could still pay on an eligible return

LaserBand 82$169.80

iRestore Professional$199.75

Should you buy direct or on Amazon?

Compare the exact model, seller, kit and return window. HairMax’s current policy excludes Amazon and other third-party purchases from its direct money-back guarantee. iRestore’s linked guarantee applies to eligible U.S. purchases from its website. A manufacturer’s long trial should never be assumed to follow an Amazon order.

Check the seller and return eligibility shown on the listing and at checkout, then save the terms with your receipt. “Ships from Amazon” and “sold by Amazon” are different. A lower price is only a better deal if the package and the purchase protections also fit your needs.

7 · Make the purchase work for you

How we would make the final decision

  1. Confirm the cause of thinning. A cap is a treatment option for a defined problem, not a diagnosis.
  2. Pick the routine you will keep. Try setting aside the proposed time for a week before spending. Include charging, positioning and storage.
  3. Compare your actual checkout options. Write down the model, seller, accessories, final price and the cost of a possible return.
  4. Set a review date. Use consistent photos and your provider’s assessment to judge progress. Record the return deadline separately so it does not disappear into a six-month experiment.

If the cost is hard to justify, compare it with the recurring budget in our minoxidil cost guide. Price alone should not decide which treatment is suitable. Our foam-versus-liquid comparison explains a different set of practical choices if topical treatment is part of your plan.

HairMax and iRestore questions, answered

Is HairMax better than iRestore for women?

We found no direct comparison establishing a winner for women. Both brands have devices marketed for female pattern hair loss. The cause and pattern of thinning, the exact device labeling and the routine matter more than whether a product is advertised with a male or female model. See our guide to hair thinning in women.

Is iRestore Elite worth it over Professional?

It can be worth the premium for a shorter daily session and longer limited warranty. At the checked prices, it costs $1,000 more. We would not pay that premium solely because it has more diodes or assume it produces more regrowth. The two-week time chart shows why shorter sessions do not necessarily mean much less total time.

Is HairMax Lumina the same as PowerFlex 272?

No. They share a 272-laser count but are different products. Lumina has an integrated battery; PowerFlex uses an external one and a flexible-cap design. Use the exact name when checking a review, manual, price or return agreement.

How long before HairMax or iRestore shows results?

Think in months. The controlled trials discussed above ran for 24–26 weeks, and visible change varies. Take baseline photos with the same lighting, angle, hair length and styling where possible. Your provider can help assess whether apparent change is meaningful. More frequent use than directed is not a shortcut.

Can you use either device with minoxidil?

Light therapy and minoxidil have been studied together, including a small 45-woman trial. Ask your provider whether combining them suits your diagnosis, and follow the device’s instructions about applying products. A combination study does not establish that every current cap, dose and medication schedule is interchangeable.

Can I stop minoxidil after buying a laser cap?

Buying a device is not a reason to change medication on your own. Discuss the whole treatment plan before switching or stopping. If shedding is the reason you are reconsidering minoxidil, our shedding guide explains label instructions and when to seek help.

Will a cap restore a receding hairline or a completely bald area?

Coverage and response are separate questions. Check whether your pattern is within the exact device’s labeling, then discuss realistic goals. A cap fitting over an area does not show that it can restore long-standing baldness. The American Academy of Dermatology describes potential partial regrowth, not restoration of a full head of hair.

Do you need to keep using the device?

Expect an ongoing routine if it helps. Hair loss can continue, and benefits require follow-up treatment. Follow your model’s directions and your provider’s advice rather than assuming a short course permanently settles the problem.

What safety issues should I check before buying?

Discuss light-sensitive conditions, medications that increase light sensitivity, pregnancy-related questions and scalp disease with your provider. Follow the manual’s eye-safety instructions. Stop and seek advice about pain or a persistent reaction. FDA clearance and a long return window do not replace checking whether the device is appropriate for you. AAD precautions.

Are shampoos and supplements required for the device to work?

They are separate purchases. Evaluate any add-on on its own ingredients, evidence and recurring cost. A bundle’s claimed value does not mean you need every item. Keep the device price visible when comparing offers and check how returning a bundle affects the refund. Our Nutrafol review examines one common add-on’s formula-specific evidence and subscription costs.

How we researched this comparison

NuWays MD compared current U.S. product listings, manufacturer manuals, return and warranty policies, FDA records and clinical literature. Our recommendations weigh routine, purchase cost, evidence relevance and ownership terms. Affiliate availability does not determine inclusion or an efficacy ranking. No vendor paid for placement.

This is a documentation-based review. We have not measured output, tested fit or comfort, evaluated customer support, or observed hair growth with these devices. Product photos identify the devices; they are not photographs of our own testing. Clinical review is pending.

We also reviewed current search results and competing buying guides to identify questions worth answering. Their rankings and marketing comparisons were not used as clinical evidence.

Calculation notes

Two-week treatment time = session minutes × sessions over 14 days. Return examples = stated device purchase price × stated percentage fee. They exclude tax, shipping, accessory and bundle adjustments. The Lumina fee example uses its advertised discounted price and also shows the regular-price alternative. These are reproducible purchase examples, not a national price survey.
