Who Should Not Receive Botox?

by | Feb 22, 2022 | Injectables | 0 comments

Botox is regarded as one of the most well-known and efficient methods to get rid of wrinkles for good. In addition to its capability to smooth lines, Botox injectors can be utilized to treat hyperhidrosis, neck spasms, and lazy eyes. As with other medicines, some people should not receive treatment.

Who are the individuals who should not be taking Botox is the question? Some of the people who shouldn’t be using Botox are nursing or pregnant women, those who suffer from neuromuscular disorders, and people suffering from neurological illnesses. If you are thinking about taking Botox injections, you need to be aware of the potential risks and their effects on your body.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria that is found in natural settings like lakes, soil, and forests. The bacteria make a chemical called botulinum toxin, from which Botox is made. It is the neurotoxin responsible for botulism, a rare disease that affects the body’s nerves and severely weakens muscles that regulate the body.

Botox manufacturers use a tiny amount of botulinum in the production of the Botox cosmetic, and it could temporarily paralyze muscles without the botulinum’s fatal effects. Botox injections block nerves from releasing acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that regulates muscle contractions. If the acetylcholine receptor is “switched off,” the muscles are able to relax.

This is why Botox is safe and can smooth the lines of frowning, wrinkles, and forehead wrinkles for three to twelve months.

What are the other uses of Botox?

Apart from addressing wrinkles in the face, Botox is also approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat conditions like eyelid spasms, cervical dystonia hyperhidrosis, and muscle contractures. (or hyperhidrosis). Another study has also shown Botox can treat migraines with chronic recurrence and bladder issues.

Who shouldn’t use Botox?

Although Botox cosmetics are safe for general use, Botox Cosmetic is safe for use by all and can treat a wide range of ailments. Certain people are at risk when they take Botox injections.

1. Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women

Due to ethical concerns, there aren’t many studies conducted to determine the effect of Botox on pregnant women due to the health risks that it poses for the child who is not yet born. While there isn’t any definitive evidence against the use of Botox, experts agree to follow a common rule that medical procedures should be avoided during pregnancy if the lives of the woman or unborn baby are in danger.

Because Botox is a tiny amount of a toxin that doctors advise particularly against injecting pregnant or nursing mothers with Botox. Similar to how pregnant women are advised not to smoke and drink throughout pregnancy, cosmetic injections like Botox are not recommended. Studies on animals conducted on mice revealed some abnormalities in fetal development, which is why the clinical trial is not conducted on real people.

The best time to seek a Botox cosmetic treatment after pregnancy is after breastfeeding ceases and when the pregnancy hormones have slowed down. The good thing for the expecting mother is that the pregnancy hormone naturally gives an attractive glow to the skin, which means there’s no reason to get any additional steps to achieve it.

2. People with Neuromuscular Disorders

Patients suffering from neuromuscular diseases such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and myasthenia graveis should stay clear of using Botox for aesthetic reasons.

Specialists and doctors are cautious of injecting patients with already-existing muscle weakness using Botox because the medication can aggravate their disease. Patients who have been exposed to small doses of the drug have reported severe respiratory problems, such as dysphagia, difficulty breathing, or difficulties swallowing. Patients with breathing disorders like asthma or emphysema should be warned against taking Botox due to similar reasons.

3. People Who Are Allergic to Botox

Allergies in Botox Cosmetic are uncommon; however, they’re not unique. People who discovered themselves to be highly sensitive to the medication experienced an allergic reaction that included hives, wheezing, itching or swelling of the lips, face and throat, tongue, and feeling faint. While there aren’t any tests for allergies, you should contact your physician before taking Botox injections.

Apart from allergies, Botox may also trigger adverse effects and complications such as:

  • Swelling, pain, or bruising on the injection location
  • The flu or headache can be a sign of something else.
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Smiles with crooked teeth
  • Drooling
  • Dry eyes or frequent tears
  • Stomach upset
  • Numbness
  • Malaise

Alternatives to Botox

Botox is a cosmetic that may be safe. However, it’s not suitable for all people. Certain people suffer from problems or allergies that stop them from obtaining the Botox cosmetic. Other people may be unable to shell out hundreds of dollars to eliminate their wrinkles. Many people prefer a more natural treatment alternative to avoid adverse negative effects.

There are many viable alternatives to Botox that patients may take into consideration. They include Chemical peels, acupuncture as well as laser treatment:

  • Acupuncture: By using fine needles, doctors can boost oxygen flow and circulation to improve the appearance of the skin and stimulate the creation of stronger collagen and elastic fibers. This can reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the skin and results in an overall healthier complexion.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels are most commonly used as an effective treatment of acne; however, they also help reduce the signs of aging on the skin. Applying chemicals to your skin (glycolic acid is the most well-known), the skin will begin to blister and peel away, leaving a fresher and more radiant appearance.
  • The laser treatment: Compared to Botox treatment, lasers are more efficient and less painful. By drawing a pixelated line over the face, the laser produces tiny wounds which stimulate collagen production within the skin.
